GBI overview
GBI (Green Building Index) is Malaysia’s green building rating tool. Multiple categories: Energy Efficiency, Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), Sustainable Site Planning, Materials & Resources (MR), Water Efficiency, Innovation. Flooring primarily contributes to IEQ and MR.
IEQ credits: FloorScore is key
Indoor air quality credits reward low-VOC materials. FloorScore is the single VOC certification accepted by both GBI and GreenRE. This is the simplest, most defensible IEQ contribution from flooring. Specify FloorScore-certified flooring on every GBI / GreenRE project.
MR credits: EPDs and recycled content
Materials credits reward transparency (EPDs, Health Product Declarations) and circular economy (recycled content, manufacturer take-back). Premium homogeneous and heterogeneous vinyl ranges typically have EPDs published. Recycled content 10-25% (pre-consumer) is common in premium ranges.
GreenRE, parallel scheme
GreenRE is a parallel Malaysian green rating scheme. Same FloorScore acceptance. Some credit differences in MR and Innovation categories.
MyHIJAU, different thing
MyHIJAU is Malaysia’s green-product registration program operated by GreenTech Malaysia. Distinct from SIRIM Mark (product compliance) and SIRIM Eco-Label (environmental performance). Often conflated by specifiers; clarify which is required in the tender.
